On Friday, February 6 the East Lansing-based All-of-us Express Children’s Theatre will be performing their winter show The Wind in the Willows. The show will be directed by East Lansing resident and AECT alum Morgan Lees and runs February 6-7 and the following weekend February 13-14.

On the heels of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and on the eve of Black History Month, Ten Pound Fiddle is offering a celebration of “Black Fathers in Folk Music.”

The show, starting at 8 p.m. Friday, features acclaimed musicians Robert Jones and Josh White Jr. portraying the historic musicians Josh White and Lead Belly.

As Martin Luther King Day approaches, many organizations are planning events to commemorate the Civil Rights activist. At the Wharton Center for the Performing Arts, the Greater Lansing MLK Holiday Commission has put together “Music of the Dream” featuring some of today’s top gospel singers. One of the singers, Geoffrey Golden, recently won Season 7 of BET’s “Sunday Best,” a reality show to find the best gospel singer in the country. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Golden has agreed to talk with Eli about his career and his upcoming Lansing visit.

Elmo, Big Bird, and their new friend from China, Hu Hu Zhu, will help MSU’s Abrams Planetarium kick off its Spring semester this coming Saturday, January 11, at 2:30pm. In “One World, One Sky”, the three friends take a voyage of the imagination to the moon and back in a show designed especially for families and children of preschool and early elementary ages.

“Nutcracker in a Nutshell 2014” takes the stage this weekend at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center in two performances that are free and open to the public.  Approximately 60 dancers aged four to twelve years from East Lansing, Okemos, Lansing, Haslett, and Dewitt will tell the story of the Nutcracker through creative movement, choreographed by dance professional Mary Jane Gamble.

The East Lansing High School (ELHS) Arts’ Programs will host the 32nd annual Collage Concert this Saturday, December 13, at 7:30 pm in the ELHS Center for the Performing Arts. The Collage Coffeehouse and Art Show will be tomorrow, Friday, December 12, from 7-9 pm in the ELHS Student Union and the Collage Art Exhibit will also be open from 6:45-7:30 pm prior to Saturday’s concert as well. Admission is free but donations are accepted.

Most of us remember the movie Twelve Angry Men as a gritty, black-and-white drama centering on jury deliberations in a homicide trial. The jurors are not named, but numbered, and Henry Fonda plays Juror #8 who gradually persuades the other eleven jurors that there is reasonable doubt. The lengthy and intense deliberation exposes the biases of individuals with a volatile mixture of backgrounds and personalities, most of which seem remarkably fresh despite the fact that the play was written sixty years ago.

Two events this weekend kick off East Lansing 2030/Collegeville Re-Envisioned, an exhibition at the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum (the Broad). This exhibit is the culmination of a year-long project sponsored by the Broad, to examine the future of East Lansing development.

This weekend (November 7 and 8) and next weekend (November 14 and 15), East Lansing-based All-of-us Express Children’s Theatre (AECT) will be performing their fall show The Frog Prince and The Truly Remarkable Puss-in-Boots. Youth from Bath, Dewitt, Diamondale, East Lansing, Grand Ledge, Haslett, Holt, Lansing, Mason, Okemos, and Perry fill the cast and crew of this latest production and range from 9-17 years of age.

The Art for Charlie annual Art Show and Auction on November 13 at the East Lansing Marriott will bring together artists from across the globe and give attendees the opportunity to purchase original drawings, paintings, photographs and sculptures. Among nationally known artists contributing work are Gary Kim from Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Mark Mehaffey from Williamston, Michigan.

On Tuesday, October 28, a Dead Poets Contest will take place starting at 7:30 pm at Dublin Square Irish Pub and Restaurant, 327 Abbot Road in East Lansing. Contestants are invited to read one or two poems by a departed poet, reading for a maximum of 4-5 minutes, and to dress “in the spirit” of that poet (generously interpreted—anything from a hat/scarf to full costume).
