Corey Cafagna Park to be Dedicated June 15

Saturday, June 4, 2016

The newly named Corey Cafagna Park, at the intersection of Sunset Lane and Southlawn, is passing through the seasons. Last fall, the City installed a name sign, planted bushes and perennials around it, and put in two park benches. The benches are aligned so people can face each other and talk.

Through the winter, the green wood sign with white lettering stood out against the park's bare trees and snowy ground. This spring, the plants are emerging, rabbits lope across the grass, and people are venturing to sit on the benches.

Street Musicians: The Other Side of the Art Festival

Wednesday, May 25, 2016

Downtown East Lansing’s summer festivals are a great opportunity for local and traveling street performers to bring their talent to the streets of East Lansing. Perhaps the Art Festival’s most renowned street performer is Crazy Richard, who performs his fire and knife juggling routine every year near Hopcat. While a few erected stages featured musical acts officially booked for last weekend’s festival, alleyways and corners play host to all the other musicians looking to join in on the fun.

The company will offer Mid-Michigan its very own party bikes to be used for customizable or pre-planned adventures in the Greater Lansing Area.

Above: picking stinging nettles.

This year’s long, cool spring has extended the time to forage for spring greens. I’m grateful for the longer season because I am still just learning what to forage and where to find it locally.

As we near the winter solstice, the temperature drops and our activities shift from running, biking and days at the pool to skating, sledding and skiing. So far this year there hasn’t been any snow, but even without it there are places to get your winter sports fix in.

ELi on Earth: Why the Leaves Change Colors

Monday, October 26, 2015

It is impossible to look outside and not be mesmerized by the dazzling orange, blazing red, and glittering yellow leaves covering the trees and falling from the sky this time of year. It is a magical time to play outside, and the opportunity to enjoy it is not long lasting.

Ever wonder why leaves change color in the fall? It’s fairly simple, but first you must understand the basics of photosynthesis. Trees absorb water through their roots and carbon dioxide from the air. Simply put, plants use the energy from the sun to convert water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and glucose.
