Public Forums Starting Soon for Elementary Building Construction
East Lansing Schools Superintendent Dori Leyko announced at last night’s Board of Education meeting that the District would begin holding public forums for the reconstruction of the closed Red Cedar Elementary School within the next six weeks.
“Community forums will be held this fall to allow public feedback on the designs. Red Cedar will be held in the next four to six weeks. Glencairn and Donley will be held shortly after Red Cedar,” Leyko told the Board.
This will mark the first time the public has had an opportunity to give input about the reconstruction of Red Cedar or reconstruction of the other five elementary buildings since voters approved a bond millage last spring. According to the construction schedule, Red Cedar Elementary will be renovated during the school year 2017-2018. In the fall of 2018, the population of Glencairn Elementary will be moved into Red Cedar while Glencairn is demolished and a new building constructed on its site.
Construction will begin on a new Donley Elementary School in fall of 2018 while school continues in the old building on the same site.
Several committees have been formed to determine the different requirements for each building. In addition, the committee which worked on getting the bond passed has been retained as the “bond workgroup” to help guide the implementation of the bond. It has been expanded to 25 members. See the full list of committees and their structure here.
Leyko also announced Monday that all bond workgroup meetings will now be open to the public and include time for public comment. The meetings are held biweekly at 10 a.m. Thursdays. The next meeting will be Sept. 7 in the Board of Education meeting room in the lower level of the high school. Subsequent meetings will be held in the Hub of the high school, on the main level.
“I want to commend the administration for its transparency and response to public comments to open up the board meetings to the public,” said Trustee Yasmina Bouraoui.
The administration has also posted updates on the “elementary school bond project” on its website.
The most recent post was Aug. 21 and did not include any details of the renovations or construction projects but states the “planning and design process is well underway for the construction of five new elementary schools (Donley, Glencairn, Marble, Pinecrest and Whitehills) and the renovation of Red Cedar Elementary School.”
