Alice Dreger and Ann Nichols

Many East Lansing residents received a “Board Watch” mailer this weekend. The mailer pushes for the reopening of Red Cedar Elementary School, a historically divisive issue in East Lansing.

The mailer appears to be solely the product of Jim Anderson, as it says he is responsible “for editorial content and errors.” (Disclosure: Anderson has donated once to ELi, in October 2015.) Anderson is a frequent public commentator at School Board and City Council meetings on a wide variety of issues and has a history of pushing on divisive issues.

In ELi's experience, he also has a history of not answering all questions regarding his role in various political goings-on. We previously reported on his connection with the PAC Neighborhoods 1st, including his hanging up on one of us (Dreger) when she called to ask him in October 2014 about the PAC. More recently, ELi’s chief Schools reporter, Karessa Wheeler, asked Anderson whether he is behind recent robocalls regarding overcrowding in the District. He refused to answer the question, telling her only “no comment.”

ELi is pursuing factual information that will help readers evaluate the accuracy of the claims made in the mailer. We will update this article or post a new one when we have more complete information about the claims made.
