Looking for the perfect holiday gift for someone on your list? Downtown East Lansing has something for just about everyone! And there are lots of Black Friday specials happening today.

Evergreen Cycles sells more than just bicycles, including bicyclist-dedicated clothing, locks and lights, bells and horns, water bottles, and more. One door down, at Campbell’s Market Basket, you can pick up an assortment of specialty foods including oils, local maple syrup, locally-roasted coffee beans, and other tasty treats to stuff a stocking or fill a basket of goodies for a host or hostess.

Right near Campbell’s, Massage & Wellness offers salt lamps and salt candle holders for calming options.

If you’re looking for the perfect gift for your creatively-minded friend, then head to Mackerel Sky. They have stickers, cards, blown-glass and ceramic vases and bowls, socks, artwork, ornaments, handmade candles and soaps, clocks, jewelry, magnets and more. They also have kids' lamps, blankets, stuffed animals, books and puzzles. (Mackerel Sky will be permanently closing at the end of 2019 because the owners are retiring, so this is the final opportunity to holiday shop at this East Lansing institution.)

The independent Saper Galleries on Albert Avenue carries fun and creative home décor and art in many different styles. Saper Galleries also offers custom framing. A block or so away, the Art Lab, affiliated with the Broad Museum, also has creative gifts, as does the Broad Museum gift shop. At the Student Book Store (SBS), also right nearby, you’ll find paints, brushes, pastels, sketchbooks, and much more for the artist.

Woven Art Yarn Shop is a great place to stop in to get fresh colorful yarn and related items for the knitter or crocheter in your life. Right next door, you’ll find Seams, East Lansing’s new downtown fabric store, selling patterns, buttons, and fabrics you won’t find anywhere else in town. Remember that you can also give the gift of classes at these shops.

As far as clothing and accessories go, on Grand River Avenue just west of M.A.C. Avenue, Threads features both men’s and women’s clothing, including many options that are casual and comfortable.

Farther down Grand River Avenue, for the wilderness enthusiast in your family Moosejaw is the ideal place. They have jackets, pants, hiking boots, backpacks and much more, including waterproof gear and snowshoes.

For your teenage or young adult daughter, sister, or friend, Pitaya, Mad Eagle and Urban Outfitters are great places to look for gifts. Mad Eagle sells a wide variety of jewelry, along with an assortment of clothes and accessories. Pitaya is more clothes-focused, while still having a selection of jewelry. Splash of Color and Sundance Jewelers also offer jewelry options for both men and women.

Clever Clover on Grand River Avenue has been temporarily closed for expansion but we expect that when it opens again, the store will again offer unique clothes, scented candles, specialty wrapping papers, cards, terrarium kits, and much more.

Want to pick up some MSU gear for Spartans on your list? Downtown East Lansing is filled with MSU merchandise for moderate to diehard Spartan fans. SBS, Campus Street Sportwear, Rally House, and Campus Corner all carry MSU shirts, sweatshirts, hats, sweatpants, socks, blankets and more.

For the more devoted fans, SBS and Rally House have tons of options, including MSU ornaments, pajamas, signs, baby clothes, stockings, Santa hats, balls, phone cases, dog jackets, stuffed animals, spatulas – almost anything on which you can stick a Spartan helmet.

Along with clothes, the East Lansing locations of the national chains Urban Outfitters and Target are selling holiday decorations and an array of other gift items. Urban Outfitters sells blankets, pillows, candles, books, records and mugs. They also have a range of items to make for a unique gift: heat-able stuffed animals, record players and games.

If you know someone who already has a record player or who could use some new music on CD, head over to Flat Black & Circular to check out the music available there.

Archives Book Shop and its sibling store, Curious Book Shop, offer affordable used books for any booklover as well as funky gift items like old postcards, yearbooks, maps, calendars, and scrapbooks.

Need a coffee break or something for the caffeine-addicted love of your life? Two regional-local coffee shops have recently opened on Albert Avenue – Foster Coffee and Blue Owl Coffee. Both will make you a fresh cup and sell you specialty whole-bean coffee, mugs, and coffee-related equipment, plus fun snack items for stockings or co-workers.

This is just a sampling of what you can find! And remember there are lots of dining and drinking options downtown, where you can take a break from shopping and pick up a gift card! If you’re interested in driving down, parking is expected to be readily available because of MSU being on Thanksgiving break.
