Volunteers sought to serve on the East Lansing School Board’s Sex Education Advisory Board
June 21 is the deadline to apply to join the School District’s Reproductive Health Advisory Board, which reviews the materials and speakers used to teach East Lansing’s students about sex.
Mary Ellen Vrbanac, Sex Education Director, sent out an email Thursday requesting parents, students and staff members to consider joining the board, which meets three to four times per year.
“Please consider joining SEAB as we discuss and plan for effective reproductive health instruction in the East Lansing Public Schools, review new curricula and materials for use at elementary, middle and high school, and assess program effectiveness,” Vrbanac wrote.
There are thirteen members on the board, who each serve a three year term. The Board of Education selects the members to be “widely representative of the diverse beliefs and values reflected in our school community and prevailing community standards within the context of state and federal law,” according to Board policy. Of those thirteen, at least one must be a current student.
The next meeting date for the advisory board is 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 8 in the Board Room on the lower level of East Lansing High School.
To apply for a position on the advisory board, fill out the application on the District’s website.
