Educator Workshop: Poet as Citizen

Saturday, Mar. 28, 2020    9am–12pm

Poet as Citizen: Writing Poetry as an Active Civic Skill

"Educators of all levels are invited to join Vaughn W. M. Watson, Ed.D., Assistant Professor in the Department of Teacher Education, and doctoral students Alecia Beymer and Will Langford for this interactive workshop.

In connection with the exhibitions, John Lucas and Claudia Rankine: Situations and Visual Citizenship, educators will compose multi-genre creative works as they form multiple understandings of citizenship. Educators will spend time in the museum galleries and take back strategies for building opportunities for using poetry and creative responses within their own classrooms. This workshop is recommended for educators of all subjects. SCECHs are available.

Registration is required. Click here to register for this free workshop.

Breakfast of bagels, coffee, and tea will be provided. Each participant will receive a copy of Claudia Rankine’s 2014 book Citizen: An American Lyric, which will be integral to the workshop. A collection of personal and shared stories of the daily lives of people of color, Citizen combines poetry-prose-images to amplify the micro and macro racist aggressions that occur throughout the social and political fabric of the United States."
