East Lansing Police are reporting that at about 2:30 this morning, a shooting occurred in the 2300 block of Stonehedge Drive, near the Lake Lansing Meijer store on the northwest side of East Lansing.

The Stonehedge Apartments comprise the complex made up of white, townhouse-style buildings with colorful awnings, at the northeast corner of Lake Lansing Road and Marfitt Road, just east of Meijer.

According to this morning’s press release from ELPD, “The suspects forced their way into an apartment where an altercation occurred and a single gunshot was fired. Officers located a 21 year old Delhi Township man with a gunshot wound to the torso. The victim was transported to Sparrow Hospital for medical care.”

The victim is not an MSU student, according to police.

Police say that “The suspects are described as being 4-5 African-American males wearing dark colored hooded jackets and sweatshirts with their faces partially obscured. Witnesses provided a more detailed description of one of the suspects. He is described as a light skinned African–American male wearing a grey hooded jacket. This individual is reported to have a closely shaved beard.”

Initial investigation “indicates that this was not a random incident. As such, ELPD does not have any information to believe there is a wide scale threat to the community.”

At about 3:20 a.m., within an hour of the police response, a Nixle alert went out to the public about the police responding to a shooting in that area. That alert indicated there was “no widespread community threat at this time.”

This incident follows the shooting death of MSU student Isai Berrones on October 12 on Chandler Road, just north of Lake Lansing Road, about a mile due east of this morning’s shooting.

As ELi reported, in that case, a suspect has been arrested and arraigned for homicide and weapons charges.

This is a developing story which ELi will be following.
