Earlier today, ELi was contacted by a reader who asked why ELPD officers were questioning Hawk Nest residents about a white van that had possibly been following children in the neighborhood.

We asked ELPD Information Officer Interim Captain Steven Gonzalez, who supplied the following information: yesterday, August 28, 2017 at approximately 5:30 p.m. the ELPD Department responded to a suspicious situation in the 400 block of Avocet Drive, in Hawk Nest.

Officers spoke with two young people who “reported being followed by an unknown male in a white minivan as they walked down the sidewalk.” They said that he drove slowly behind them as they walked to a local park. When they left the park he started following them again. According to Gonzalez, “the subject did not attempt to contact the juveniles, but his actions are concerning.”

The subject is described as “a younger black male, tall in stature, with dark short hair…wearing a white t-shirt.” The white minivan he was driving may have been a Chrysler.

Individuals with information are urged to call the ELPD tip line at 1-877-ELPD-TIP or 911 in the event of an emergency. Officer Gonzalez “advises residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.”
