ELHS Alumni congratulate the Class of 2018 . . . now through June

On June 10, about 300 high school seniors will march onward to join the ranks of Trojan Alumni who have graduated from East Lansing Public Schools over the last century.

East Lansing Info asked Trojan Alumni who live, work and retain ties in East Lansing to congratulate the Class of 2018. From now through early June, we'll feature their reflections and informal advice to the graduating class.

Thank you ELHS Alumni and congratulations to the Class of 2018.

Featured Alumnus

Timothy “Tim” Staudt

Class of 1967

What is your occupation?

Sports Director, WILX TV, NBC Lansing

Host, Staudt on Sports, WVFN Radio, Lansing

Why did you make East Lansing home?

I stayed here because the job opportunities in sportscasting were too great, and we raised a family here. My wife and I have three grown children: Tom, Matthew and Patrick.

Where did you grow up in East Lansing?

I grew up in the Glencairn neighborhood

Where do you live now?

I live in the area and frequently cover East Lansing sports.

What are some funny or fond memories you have about high school?

I ran cross country and played baseball at ELHS. My prom date had to come from Dayton, Ohio—no luck with girls in our class!

What was your favorite place in East Lansing when you attended high school?

Loved the Tasty Freeze on Grand River Avenue now closed—we hung out there in the spring after practice and games.

What path did you initially take when you graduated?

I was in journalism school at MSU and thought I’d write sports. I had a chance in college to do radio news at WJIM-TV and radio during college days and became full-time sports director at WJIM-TV in May 1971. I stayed there 10 years, then in 1980, moved to WILX.

What do you think is different about high school today?

Kids today don’t have the same values as I remember, and they want to express themselves more than simply do what they are told—our mantra. The high school today is obviously modernized. I remember sitting in the hall after President Kennedy was shot waiting to be let out of school early. We practiced freshmen basketball that day just to have something to do.

What do you think is the same?

East Lansing still looks basically the same but has such a diverse enrollment. We had two minorities in the Class of ’67.

What advice do you have for graduating seniors?

Keep an open mind about future jobs, do not burn any bridges anywhere with anyone, and intern as much as possible into potential future job sites.

Want to join Trojan Alumni in congratulating the Class of 2018? Our only asks are that you're an ELHS graduate, live or work in East Lansing, and are willing to share a current picture and one from your high school years. Interested? Contact Ann Kammerer at halmkammerer76@gmail.com.
