Eight East Lansing residents are now candidates for the four open seats on the East Lansing Board of Education, including two current and one past board members.

Kath Edsall lost her bid for re-election to the board in 2016 but officially filed as a candidate with the City Clerk’s Office to regain her seat this November.

Also running to retain their seats are current Board President Kate Powers and current Trustee Terah Chambers. Two former unsuccessful candidates - Chris Martin and Todd Swales - are also trying for spots on the board again.

Completing the slate are Shari Rose, Noel Garcia and Thasin Sardar.

Current board members Karen Hoene and Nell Kuhmuench are not running for re-election.

To qualify for election, candidates must be registered voters in the school district and must file an affidavit of identity with the clerk along with the nominating petition. A $100 non-refundable fee may be filed in lieu of petitions. All candidates but Garcia and Sardar opted to pay the fee instead of gathering petition signatures.

The election will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 6.

Two years ago, Trustees Erin Graham and Hillary Henderson were re-elected to four year terms, and Edsall lost her seat to Nichole Martin. Chambers was selected earlier this year to complete the term of Yasmina Bouraoui who stepped down last fall.

Hoene and Powers were first elected to the board in 2014, while Kuhnmuench joined the Board in 2010.
