The East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) has obtained an open murder arrest warrant for a 30-year-old Mississippi man in connection with the shooting that occurred in East Lansing last week. ELPD now characterizes the shooting as a “homicide.”

An “open murder arrest warrant” means that ELPD has classified the homicide as a combination of first- and second-degree murder. According to ELPD Deputy Chief Steve Gonzalez, the department can't assume that the fact of a fatal shooting means there was a murder, but he says that once (as in this case) they are "confident enough to make a case to the prosecutor," they formally classify the incident as a murder.

The department says it is “working with state and federal officials to take this individual into custody,” and that his identity will be released when he is arraigned.

As we reported previously, an MSU student was shot and killed early Friday morning at an apartment complex on Abbot Road near where it becomes Chandler Road. The victim was 22-year-old Isai Berrones from Alamo, Texas.

On the morning of Friday, October 12, officers responded at approximately 2:44 a.m. to a report of shots fired and people fighting at the 25 East apartment complex, located at 2501 Abbot Road. When they reached the scene, they found Berrones with a gunshot wound, and he was transported to the hospital and pronounced deceased.
