Today, MSU’s College of Human Medicine announced that ELi’s longtime Astronomy reporter, Aron Sousa, MD, has been chosen as interim dean of the college. Perhaps because they did not want to appear to be favoring ELi over the Lansing State Journal, MSU did not actually mention that Sousa is ELi’s longtime Astronomy reporter.

Full disclosuse: I’ve married this guy twenty times, although only the first time was legal. Why have I? Honestly, for anyone who knows us, the real question is why he’s married me twenty times.

Anyway, I’m not here to brag that we really know how to pick them at ELi, although we do. I’m here to point out to you that a guy busy and productive enough to be seen as worthy dean material has also been writing for us about Jupiter, Venus, and Uranus (Uranus more than I really care for), as well as mosquitos, zinnias, bud-grafting, salt options for ice and snow, mammatus clouds, and unidentified pink objects.

And that means you, dear reader, cannot tell me you are too busy to do a little reporting for your fellow East Lansinger. Seriously. We want you. And you are probably just as unskilled as Sousa to be a reporter. He doesn’t let that stop him. Hell, that’s why he has an editor, and a damn fine one at that. (Me again. I edit the Nature section for ELi. Because I am unqualified, that's why.)

You know what you know about this town that would make a good story. You might think, “Only three people will be interested in this, Alice!” Stop. I’ll bet there are at least five in this town. We’ll help you find the five.

And perhaps the five of you will go on to do great things—to found a new salon dedicated to East Lansing design, to create a new varietal of blueberry that will do perfectly well in our parkways even in the face of football weekend traffic, to run for Council on the “sure, there’s five of us and only three can win” slate.

Do it. Michael Teager took the plunge for us this week, and he’s got a little baby!  Chris Root did it for us this week, and it’s not like she wouldn’t rather be in her garden! (Fun fact: If you go to a sheriff’s auction with Chris, she will actually be distracted by the purslane at the base of the parking meter.)

Join us. You might just be surprised at how rewarding it is. You might even get named dean! But they probably won’t mention your ELi work when you are.
