Halloween is just around the corner, which means East Lansing is alive with all the fun that comes this time of year!

In addition to trick-or-treating in East Lansing’s residential neighborhoods on October 31, 2014 from 6-8 p.m., there are several other activities in East Lansing on Thursday, October 23. These include:

  • East Lansing’s "Great Pumpkin Walk,": free trick-or-treating at more than 50 participating downtown businesses from 5-7 p.m.
  • "Land of Oz” at the Wild Goose Inn: costumed actors from East Lansing High School’s Theater Department help transform this downtown bed & breakfast into the Land of Oz.
  • "Safe Halloween" on MAC Avenue: trick-or-treating with MSU’s Greek community on MAC Ave from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
  • "arachno-BROAD-ia at the Eli Broad Museum: "frightening fun," "ghoulish games," cider and donuts from Quality Dairy and volunteers from MSU’s Bug House.

For more information on everything the City has to offer in conjunction with The Great Pumpkin Walk, visit their website.

As you plan for Halloween night, please keep these safety tips in mind (some apply even to those who are not actually participating in the tricking or treating):

  • Go trick-or-treating with an adult or friends and stay in a group.
  • Keep costume accessories such as weapons (wands, swords, etc.) short and flexible. This helps prevents injuries in case of a fall.
  • Be sure costumes fit properly and aren’t too long. This will help avoid trips and falls.
  • Use some type of reflective device like tape or a glow stick. These can be hung around the neck or attached to costumes or trick-or-treat bags. This makes the trick-or-treater more visible to cars driving through dark neighborhoods.
  • An adult should check any candy before giving it to a child to eat.
  • Follow all traffic lights and signs when crossing the street.
  • Use sidewalks and paths when possible.
  • Face paint is always a good option rather than a mask which can impede a child’s ability to see clearly.
  • If you are driving, drive slowly in anticipation of large pedestrian crowds.
  • Drivers should avoid loud music or visual distractions.
