With Jill Feldpausch formally stepping into the role, East Lansing has filled the position of Finance Director. The vacancy occurred with the retirement of Mary Haskell last December. Feldpausch, who had served as Assistant Finance Director under Haskell since 2008, has been serving as Interim Director since Haskell’s retirement.
The City’s administration is pleased that this crucial role has been filled by Feldpausch, whom City Manager George Lahanas had previously told ELi he wanted in the lead position. Feldpausch has worked with the City of East Lansing since 2006, and a she holds a Bachelor of Arts in accounting from Michigan State University.
“I think the whole Council was hoping Jill would be the new Finance Director,” Mayor Mark Meadows tells ELi. “She was the person hired as part of a succession plan for that department and she is definitely the right person for the job.”
Mayor Pro Tem Ruth Beier alluded to East Lansing’s projected revenue shortfall and escalating debt when she commented to ELi, “I am looking forward to working with Jill. She clearly knows what she is doing, and she is committed to the City. Being the Finance Director in a city that is struggling financially is not a job for the faint of heart, and we are lucky to have Jill.”
Councilmember Erik Altman also praised Feldpausch, saying, “The financial pickle we’re in would be a lot worse if the City weren't as well run as it is, and the finance department is a big part of that. Jill's been a key player on a team that gets plaudits from our auditors year after year, and puts in immense amounts of work to make the budget comprehensible so that everyone can know what’s in it. We’re very lucky to have her as our new CFO.”
Under Haskell, with whom Feldpausch worked closely, East Lansing was annually awarded the Government Finance Officers Association’s Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting, a recognition awarded for thoroughness and transparency in government accounting.
In a press release announcing the appointment, City Manager George Lahanas stated, “During her almost 11 years of service to the City of East Lansing, Jill has proven to be a dedicated and highly skilled professional with broad fiscal knowledge and a commitment to public service. We are confident that she will continue to lead with excellence in her new role.”
