The Big Green Gig is the name of East Lansing’s 2017 celebration of all things peace, love and earth related.
Michigan State University’s Community Relations Council, together with a dozen student environmental organizations, are hosting an Earth Day celebration at Valley Court Park from 3 p.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, April 22.
Activities include painting flowerpots and tie-dying. There will be a drum circle, a model biodome and a plant giveaway, along with live music.
“We are excited to bring together a number of organizations and community members to celebrate our planet in a beautiful, open-air park atmosphere,” wrote CRC intern Payden Myers.
Groups participating include MSU Greenpeace, Spartan Sierra Club, Greener Together, Sustainable Spartans, MSU Bailey Bee Team, MSU Counter Cuisine Club, MSU Climate Reality Project Campus Corps, MSU LEAF Club, Student Greenhouse Project, MSU Fisheries and Lettuce Live Well
Other regional activities include:
- Fenner Nature Center, 2020 East Mount Hope Road, Lansing is hosting Earth Day Extravaganza from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Saturday April 22. This is a stewardship work day for volunteers and will include educational programs about the plants and animals at Fenner.
- Harris Nature Center, 3998 Van Atta Road, Okemos, will host its Stewardship Morning from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. April 22. Volunteers are needed to help prepare flower beds, maintain trails and pull invasive plants in the woods.
- A week later, Party for the Planet at Potter Park Zoo will take place from 12:00p.m. – 4 p.m. Saturday April 29. There will be special animal enrichment activities 1 pm. – 3 p.m., and conservation tables will be located throughout the Zoo.
Valley Court Park is located at 300 Valley Court, in East Lansing.
